Background Tasks and Background Table

Some reports, such as a DHTML report with a large amount of data can take a long time to run. You can now chose to run these reports in Background mode.

To set reports to run in background mode:

  1. Click Preferences in the top menu of the Administrator console.

  2. Click the DHTML > Properties > Advanced tab.

  3. Select the Background Mode Timeout check box.

  4. Set the time for the DHTML reports to run in Background Mode.

  5. Click Save to set the time.

The reports you select to run in Background mode are listed in the Background Table. This table contains the status information for the tasks submitted through Run, Advanced Run and Background mode.

DHTML Pipeline

When there is more than one page to display in a report, the total pages is shown by a + rather than the actual value.

In the reverse direction, it shows  the page number correctly, instead of the + sigh.

These features in DHTML are called the DHTML pipeline. When you run a report with multiple pages, instead of waiting and seeing a blank screen before all the pages complete, the first page is  generated so you can see something, then in the background, the processing continues to generate all the results. When you click the navigation to go to a particular page, the page is sent to your browser. In the beginning, you won’t see the total page number on the navigation bar while the engine is processing the rest part of the report.

This feature is very helpful when you run a large report, which may have thousands or more pages; you will not see much difference when you run a small report.

See  DHTML Unlock Screen for more information about DHTML reports.
